Brighten up your kids room (with just a pot of paint)

creative wall painting ideas

If you’re a minimalist like me you’ll understand my love for all white walls peppered with black and white art. That’s the kind of look I’m planning for most of our home except Anya’s room.  I don’t think any kid would chose a monochrome colour scheme for their room.  When chatting to Anya about possible colours for her room, she came up with suggestions of an orange and yellow room!  A bit too much for a minimalist like me but I started thinking about how we could use a splash of paint somewhere to add a bit of colour.

I went looking for some creative wall painting ideas and here are some really fun ways to add a splash of colour to a kids bedroom or even your own room.  You can go big or small, dark or light but the best part is you can transform the room in a couple of hours with no more than a tin of paint and a brush:

That splash of salmon pink against the white walls and floors really livens this room up.  I love how the triangles aren’t perfectly symmetrical too, making it a really interesting feature and a great backdrop for the bed.

Even though you may prefer neutral tones, bold and unexpected colour combinations like in the room above can look so striking.  The simple house shape painted in the corner is such a fun and easy way to create a playful look in a kids room which can be done in any colour combo you like.  But I especially love that they have gone for dark walls with the house shape in a much lighter tone rather than the other way around.

One of the easiest ways to add a splash of colour to a bedroom is to paint any niches in the room.  But rather than stick to one colour, two contrasting yet complimenting colours can look striking.  The wall painting idea above can be used in any room for any age but in this room, the colours really pop against all that white.

While I love yellow, it’s not a colour I would use too much of in any interior space.  But used sparingly it can be so cheerful and happy for a kids room.  I love how a simple strip of yellow paint brightens up this nursery which is otherwise mostly white.

This is probably my favourite idea of all – painting large shapes on the wall (especially a circle) to add an instant pop of colour.  You could create hexagons or triangles or any shape at all.  And to make it even more of a feature, you can hang a piece of art or put up a shelf within the painted shape.

There are so many creative wall painting ideas that you can use to brighten up your kids room.  With just a pot of paint and a brush, the whole room can be transformed in a couple of hours without breaking the bank.  These are just five ideas that I came across but my head is already whirring with so many more. If you want to be extra creative, you could even try painting your floors – it works and looks cool!  Have you got any creative paint ideas? I’d love to hear in the comments.

I love the last option as well. We’ve just had some work done at home and we went for white, white, white everywhere apart from the kids’ bedrooms and office/spare room. The last option is also my favourite. Yellow and orange need not be scary!

Ha, ha – I am very, very scared of yellow and orange! She even wanted purple grout in her bathroom. Errm – NO! But we will find a happy medium I’m sure x

Ooh I love these suggestions, especially digging the triangles although expect I’d botch it. Have never really done any DIY decorating (I leave all that handy stuff to the man) but wouldn’t mind having a stab at painting one of the boys’ room walls. Definitely ready for changing things up, thanks as always for the inspiration. Can’t wait to see your home it will be stunning i know! x

I am not a DIY’er myself, I am the ideas person and R executes! I am tempted for something similar in Anya’s room – I like the circles. House still not done! Builders finished but lots of furniture to buy and also need to ad our personal touches. That is the plan for the coming months. Need to have you girls over soon though xxx

Awesome colour inspiration honey! I’ve tended to go for bright furnishings and accessories in the kids rooms but love the idea of adoing a colourful accent to one of the walls or a shape like the last idea. You’ve got me thinking! Xx
